VisiSpecs Adds Major new Functionality in V18.1 Release

Portland, Maine (August 21, 2018) – Chalkline has released new BIM and spec integration functionality directly in Microsoft Word, enabling additional automation and time savings.

BIM Integration in VisiWord

Non-BIM users can integrate, automate, and coordinate specs with the BIM models directly in Microsoft Word.

Chalkline released the first BIM-integrated specification solution that runs directly in Autodesk® Revit® 18 months ago. It has now brought that integration and coordination directly into Microsoft Word for those users without access to Autodesk Revit. Specifiers and designers can now create the integration between the model elements and materials and the required specifications directly in Word. Coordination issues are flagged for users reducing the RFIs and Addendums due to errors and omissions. Details on what has been added, removed and changed in the model since the last model sync is also available helping users easily understand possible conflicts and updates required.

Project Key Filters can now automatically include or strike out project-specific language in all the project languages such as whether this is a LEED project or what building codes will be used. Set the project criteria once and have all project documents updated automatically ensuring a higher level of consistency while saving time editing specifications.

Document Key Filters enable users to create a document-specific checklist with links to all the related paragraphs and bracket items required. When a product is selected all the required language will be included and for products not selected those related items will be removed.

VisiSpecs Filters all include simple built-in tools for creating and previewing so users can easily manage how the document will be modified based on the applied filters.

VisiSpecs V18.1 also includes the automatic inclusion of PDF Project Manual bookmarks making reading and navigating the manual much easier. Additional project management, publishing, and Word document management features requested by customers have also been added to the release. Customer input and priority assignment continue to be critical to Chalkline’s product development process.

HDR Selects VisiSpecs as Design Specification Solution

Portland, Maine (April 25, 2018) – HDR, a global firm that provides architecture, engineering, environmental and construction services, has selected Chalkline’s VisiSpecs, The Visual Specification System, for its design specification solution.

HDR evaluated available commercial specification tools as a replacement for its internally developed specification production tools. “VisiSpecs was selected based on its quick learning curve, ease of cloud-based deployment across the many users within the firm, and ability to integrate with BIM applications,” according to Eric Michnovez, Specification Manager at HDR.

A requirement for the new spec tools was easy deployment with minimal technical support or IT resources. VisiSpecs has delivered simple-to-navigate user rights managed by the central HDR Specification Management Team. “The VisiSpecs Cloud Server allowed users in any location to easily connect to the HDR VisiSpecs Corporate Account with performance that exceeded expectations,” Michnovez said.

Ease of use was critical for HDR as the transition needed to be seamless with a very fast learning curve. Since VisiSpecs uses Microsoft Word for editing, publishing, and project management, HDR provided a short Quick Start Guide for the installation and getting started tips. This enabled project team members to continue focusing on their project responsibilities instead of being pulled into training courses.

“Chalkline is happy to have such a well-respected firm evaluate and choose VisiSpecs for their specification solution. We are also very fortunate to work closely with the HDR Specification Management team collaborating on features, processes, and integrations that improve their implementation as well as the value to all of our customers,” stated Seamus McGrady, COO of Chalkline.

VisiSpecs Keynoting Solution for Autodesk Revit Now Available

Portland, Maine (October 23, 2017) – Chalkline continues the development of the next generation of BIM integrated specs integrating specs, keynotes, and the BIM model. Currently, these three disciplines are critical to the quality and coordination of construction documents, yet very separate processes. Inevitably, errors and omissions cause RFIs, Addendums, and Change Orders and can result in the perception of a low-quality product.

Design firms realize the benefits in time savings, coordination, and quality checks this integration enables. Many design firms simply do not attempt to use keynotes referencing specifications due to the level of work required to manually keep them coordinated.

VisiRevit now enables users to manage master keynotes and automatically filter them based on the specifications of the project, saving hours of tedious and error-prone text editing. The VisiSpecs Link Console lists all the materials and elements contained in the BIM model with the linked specs. Now users can directly assign keynotes to those materials and elements with the visual model and linked specs all in view. VisiSpecs further makes this process more efficient including a search feature while assigning keynotes directly in the VisiSpecs Keynote Tree.

VisiSpecs Keynoting Solution

VisiSpecs provides the most advanced Autodesk Revit Keynote Integration, Management, and Assignment solution.

VisiSpecs also released synchronization of all user updates to keynotes ensuring the most recently updated list of keynotes is available. VisiSpecs Keynote Manager can be run directly in Autodesk Revit or in Microsoft Word depending on the user preference. Since the keynote file is saved in the VisiSpecs Cloud Server, users may easily save and access the keynotes in the application they already use.

Customers also requested user roles and permissions be assigned to different users in the organization. Certain users will be managing the master or project keynote list while other users will be assigning those keynotes in Revit. Additionally, if multiple users are editing keynote files a check-out and check-in process alerts users if another user is editing the file.

Chalkline Adds Floating Licensing and Simplifies Pricing Editions

Portland, Maine (August 7, 2017) – Chalkline, Inc. has added floating licensing to VisiSpecs, The Visual Specification System, while also simplifying the package editions.

New Floating Licensing and Simplified Packaged Editions

The existing strategy in pricing and licensing VisiSpecs to enable mid to large corporations the functionality and pricing options to best suit their budgets and implementation plans while also offering the smallest of firms a low entry price point continues.  Larger firms require better user management and collaboration functionality with the ease of data access in the cloud and simple deployment across their offices around the globe.  Smaller firms may initially only need easier and more efficient specification writing and publishing tools.

Floating Licenses are now offered which help in the rapid deployment of applications across a firm while reducing the need to track individual user-named licenses.  A pool of licenses enables many more users within the corporate account the ability to install, register, and use VisiSpecs.  Time and cost savings can be seen not only in the license procurement, but also in the management of additional licenses, users, and purchasing as VisiSpecs adoption increases throughout the firm.  The Per User licensing will also continue to help smaller firms and teams implement VisiSpecs at a lower price point.

Chalkline has also reduced the number of packaged Editions from 4 to 3 (Starter, Team, and Company Editions).  This simplification assists clients in finding the right Edition for their needs with fewer Edition changes as their needs grow.  Functionality within the Editions has been updated to reflect the major advancements in VisiSpecs over the past year.

All VisiSpecs Editions now include the integrated Video Tutorials for FREE and Cloud Server storage space limitations have been removed across the board.  VisiSpecs volume-based license discounts start at just 11 licenses and the multiyear license discounts are still available.

The time, effort, and cost savings benefits greatly from the VisiSpecs Hybrid Cloud Server deployment.  VisiSpecs data is stored in Microsoft’s Azure Data Centers, which guarantees an industry-leading 99.99% availability. All VisiSpecs databases are protected by redundant backups and replicated servers with automatic failover. To ensure availability for disaster recovery purposes, VisiSpecs data is also replicated on a continuous basis to a secondary Microsoft Azure Data Center located in a different geographic region. This Active Geo-Replication protects the data from a catastrophic failure within the primary data center due to natural disasters or other causes of prolonged downtime.

Seamus McGrady, COO of Chalkline adds, “It is very rewarding to listen, problem solve, and respond to our client requests. This not only helps with the adoption of our VisiSpecs solutions but also helps our clients improve and achieve their business goals.”

With all these changes in functionality and pricing options, the initial price point remains at just $49/user/month while the Company Edition pricing is reduced to just $129/user/month.  Floating licenses are an additional 50% and available immediately.  The flexibility for month-to-month and pay-as-you-go payments and licensing will continue.  Educational curriculum licenses are highly encouraged and continue to be freely accessible.

New VisiSpecs Keynote Manager Released by Chalkline

Portland, Maine (April 19, 2017) – Chalkline has added another integration tool to VisiSpecs that enables customers to further coordinate construction drawings and specifications. The VisiSpecs Keynote Manager not only provides coordination and verification but also saves customers hours on each project eliminating the need to manually filter master keynote lists to project-specific lists.

VisiSpecs Keynote Manager integrates master keynote management and automatic project keynote filtering, which ensures high-quality and coordinated construction documents.

The VisiSpecs Keynote Manager enables customers to import their existing master keynote list instead of creating a new list for each project. Editing keynotes manually in Excel, Notepad, or third-party tools that are not integrated with their BIM models or specifications is time-consuming and inevitably causes design errors leading to RFIs, Addendums, and Change Orders.

VisiSpecs Keynote Manager provides complete control over the keynotes including adding, deleting, editing, sorting and commenting with all modifications tracked by date and user. With the click of a button, all keynotes linked to specification sections may be included with others filtered out. VisiSpecs doesn’t force deletion of keynotes, so as the design progresses it is easy to automatically add keynotes for sections added while verifying keynotes that are not included for sections that have been removed. Keynotes may be viewed either in a grid structure making it easy to sort, select, comment, and edit; or viewed in a tree structure similar to Autodesk Revit keynote views with the ability to edit the VisiSpecs keynotes directly in the tree view.

VisiSpecs Keynote Manager also offers pre-selection of master keynotes and annotations to be included in all project keynote lists helping to save even more time.  A 3-state selection feature gives users a clearer indication of their choices on the keynotes and the ability to export only selected project keynotes from the master list.  Keynote duplicate checking and correction are included along with spell checking to ensure keynote lists are accurate.  Users new to VisiSpecs will find importing their project documents and keynotes fast and easy with the immediate benefits of using the new VisiSpecs Keynote Manager and BIM model integration and verification.

Chalkline Releases New Document Formatting Control and Publishing Capabilities

Portland, Maine (March 8, 2017) – Chalkline announces the release of VisiWord v17.1 which includes a number of customer-driven features and enhancements. Features include new Design Manager Templates for formatting all documents in a project to ensure a consistent look and feel. This feature, a high priority for many customers, relieves the tedious and time-consuming effort required to format project documents to meet client demands. The VisiSpecs Design Manager controls the look and feel of the documents both during editing as well as publishing submissions. One format does not fit all client needs. Changing the page layout, fonts, paragraph spacing, headers/footers, number spacing and more is difficult to do and error-prone. Whether managing the layout and format of a single document or hundreds, VisiSpecs gives users advanced control over their documents to get their job done faster and to deliver a higher quality product.VisiWord leverages the feature rich editing of Microsoft Word with advanced spec editing tools, centralized documentation management, and project manual publication.

VisiSpecs Automatic Style formatting enables the delivery of the final product in the right format meeting the client’s needs. The styles may be user-defined and vary depending on the document set as VisiSpecs does not force one format to be used for all documents. Using the powerful style features of Microsoft Word with the VisiSpecs project document control and publishing delivers the optimal solution.

Engineers are asked to meet the document formatting and Header/Footer requirements of many architects which can be very time-consuming and error-prone. With VisiSpecs, Architects can either have the engineer work on the same project through VisiSpecs project sharing or email the architects Design Guide Template which assigns the correct header/footer and format to the engineering documents.

Inserting documents from manufacturers or various websites requires modifying all the formatting to match the rest of the project documents. This is also very time-consuming requiring stepping through the entire document to match the format, numbering, and layout.  VisiWord v17.1 includes a Style Mapper to quickly convert the styles to a customer’s standard set of styles. With the consistent set of styles, the ability to reformat the entire project is enabled by the VisiSpecs Automatic Style application in v17.1.

VisiWord v17.1 also includes better user control over the Publishing Path saving time coordinating documents for delivery with all the other project documents. For project teams, Chalkline also added an Activity Report letting users know what other team members have been doing within the project since their last login.  Additionally, ribbon menu selections have been reorganized facilitating ease of use and time savings.

Chalkline Delivers First Spec Solution That Runs Directly in Autodesk Revit

Portland, Maine (February 8, 2017) – Chalkline is pleased to announce the availability of the first application to offer coordinated construction specification writing directly in Autodesk® Revit®.  VisiSpecs, the next generation of BIM-integrated specifications, has taken another leap forward centralizing the construction document coordination with the BIM model.

Project Architects, engineers, and designers who are using Autodesk Revit to model their designs are now able to also write the coordinated construction specifications side by side with the model. As BIM elements get added to the model, the linked specifications for that element can also be included. As the linked models are added, the specifications for those linked elements can also be added and coordinated with the project specs. Integration and verification of the BIM model and specs without having to export the model first means tighter integration, simplified processes, less data management, and fewer errors and omissions. Contractors can easily link the specs and docs to their construction intent BIM model for estimating, bidding, construction administration, as-builts, and commissioning.

VisiRevit

VisiRevit provides the coordination, automation, and verification of the BIM model and specifications reducing design time and errors while improving project data access to the users in the application they already have installed.

Chalkline is delivering the most integrated construction document solutions by leveraging the tools already being used resulting in less implementation effort and higher adoption rates. VisiWord enables users to edit directly in Microsoft Word with additional spec editing and project management functionality like the customizable project tree, spec editing tools, header/footer, and TOC management, and complete publishing of all documents. As VisiSpecs integrates with client BIM model element and material standard naming conventions, the BIM model does not need to be changed in any way.  This enables immediate integration of the BIM model and specifications delivering more coordination and verification improving product quality.

“VisiSpecs’ integration, coordination, and verification of the project specifications directly in Revit is a great example of an Autodesk Development Network partner’s solutions,” said Jim Quanci, director of the Autodesk Developer Network. “VisiSpecs brings together two separate processes creating a design environment enabling our customers to produce coordinated construction documents while saving time and reducing design errors and omissions.”

VisiWord is document-neutral and BIM models don’t have to change meaning clients are able to download the free VisiSpecs trial and immediately link their models and specs. Spec editing in Microsoft Word is both familiar and feature-rich while the enhanced editing features and publication tools provide time and cost savings in writing project manuals. Team collaborators can simply open Word to read and comment on specs as well as other related project files and data linked in the project. As the BIM model and specs continue to be designed and written, the verification and coordination checks are done either in Revit or in VisiView for those not using Revit.

“We are proud to be delivering this major upgrade to the BIM users,” said Michael Brennan, CEO and President of Chalkline, Inc. “Listening and working closely with our clients has enabled us to focus on the right solution delivering the highest value.”

VisiSpecs upgrades the editing and publication tools for specifiers while simplifying the BIM model coordination process by not forcing any changes to the existing models. VisiSpecs can also help to highlight areas of the model needing improvement or data changes further improving the quality of the product delivered. Through live model and spec coordination directly in Autodesk Revit, users are not left wondering how old the data is and what has changed since their export.
